Hiland Park represents an important link in establishing an eastern green wildlife corridor connecting to areas protected by the Massachusetts Audubon Society.
“Everything natural – every flower, tree, and animal – has important lessons to teach us if we would only stop, look, and listen.”

Volume XXVI #
PETER POND, DUDLEY
I first saw it near the close of a rare summer afternoon in the month of June. It is not easily found, and, though near the traveled road, it cannot be seen, as it lies nestled within a deep wood. It is in the town of Dudley; but somewhat nearer Webster than Dudley Center, though wholly in the latter town. I walked two miles out of my way to find it, but this was my own fault, for I had not studied the map carefully.
But I was amply rewarded for my walk, as it took me over Dudley Hill, from which I had some glorious views of the surrounding country, all new to me. I found that the people of this town knew all about Peter Pond, and a farmer very kindly directed me on my way, after walking over a pleasant old road and crossing a brook I turned into a cart path leading through the woods, and soon saluted the object of my search.
It was profoundly quiet there, the sunlight pouring in among the trees, and the clouds floating overhead lent an indescribable charm to the passing hour, and made it a fitting place for “great and tranquil thoughts.” The only sign of life I noticed were two crows sailing leisurely along over the water, and some field mice which I accidently disturbed.
Not even a boat did I discover, though I imagined that some Dudley or Webster fisherman might occasionally stroll along the shore, “trying their luck.”
Peter Pond! I often think of you in your solitude, away from all the noise and confusion of city or town, political or religious strife. Through all the changing seasons you are serene and unruffled, communing with the trees, the sky, clouds and earth. I wonder who gave you your name, and what are the traditions which gather about you? Can you not let me into your secret?”
